On
February during
Carnival, Oristano is the theatre of one of most popular folk
festivals, the most awaited by both Sardinians and tourists. It
stands for the fertility ritual of the land and celebrates knight
games of Spanish and Portugal medieval origin. The aim of the
games is for the knights to pass with a sword through a star that
is places three meters high from the ground as a hope of good
harvest for the coming year. During the day of ‘Candelora’, the
‘gremi’ pick their ‘Componidori’, the chosen one for this task.
His dressing in typical original women clothing of the time is
undoubtedly the most important ritual of the festival as a whole.
As he is a superior being, his feet are never to touch the ground
and the mask is wearing leaves the audience wondering on the true
protagonist’s identity. He’s in fact dressed in women clothes
but shows, at the same time, great virility during the games which
makes it the most magical and mysterious aspect of this celebration.
It’s one of the most suggestive rituals in Sardinia not only for
the celebration in itself but also for the part taking of the
people involved in an amazing and colourful surrounding of folklore.
