Every
1st of May in Cagliari take place
one of the most important religious festivals in Sardinia, Saint Efis Festival. It is
mainly held in Cagliari where a procession of carts and
costumes leaves from the ancient quarter of Stampace where
the statue of the Saint is kept, to get to Nora on the
following day, after stopping in Sarroch for the night.
The main cart is followed by thousands of believers to
the lovely church of Nora where it is said that the Saint
was decapitated, and then to Pula which hosts the night
celebrations with a proper feast for the followers. On
the 3rd of May the Saint is celebrated with fireworks,
music and shows in Pula and it’s then back to Cagliari
on the 4th where he finds the whole city awaiting in prayer
and applause to thank him for defending them from plagues
and pirates.
