During
the second half of May, the
‘Sagra’ is held in the city of Sassari and it’s one of the most
celebrated popular events of the island. During the past, riding
these horses was a way to pay respect to important guests, but
with time the approach to this manifestation changed and became
a party of people walking and riding in a procession. People
wear ancient costumes typical of every region of the island,
the same ones that their ancestors only used to wear on special
occasions, making this ‘Sagra’ not only very special for all
Sardinians but also one of the most important popular celebrations
of the island. Undoubtedly the most important element of this
celebration is the horse, man’s life and work companion and
its only transport at that time. The extremely long procession
is formed by 4000 men in costumes and 400 horses coming from
Abbasanta, Santu Lussurgiu and Ghilarza. It’s then concluded
with knights and amazons who show their acrobatic abilities
of high speed and extreme precisions with ‘pariglie’ and ‘parazzas’.
During the evening the party continue with music and dancing
in Italia’s square in Sedilo.
