Every
year, on the evening of the 14th of August, a
street full of people in Sassari awaits for the chandelier procession
called ‘La Farradda’. The origin of this celebration is associated
to the city demographic increase as well as the emerging of corporations
from Pisa who used to vow to the Virgin Mary by lighting church-candles.
In the 16th century the town was kneeled down by a terrible plague
which killed several people. As the population called upon the
Virgin Mary to be saved and was liberated by the disease, every
year the city celebrates the Madonna in this long procession.
The ‘gremi’, corporations of Spanish denomination, open the procession
carrying big wood chandeliers. They are about three meters high
and all hand made to replace the original church-candles which
are impossible to find and extremely expensive. The procession
is about three hours long, it starts from Rosario church to end
to the Romanic church of Santa Maria of Betlem after crossing
the historical centre of the city. The whole celebration is accompanied
with melodious tunes of flutes and drums. It is also mandatory
for the procession to stop in front of the town hall so that the
people of Sassari can thank with a warm applause the administrators
of their city for a well done job.
